March 2013 Archives

On March 19, 2012, OIT will perform some maintenance on the data storage devices that are used by Sakai and RCI. Work will begin at 9:00 pm and last all evening. Sakai will not be available during that time (additional outages are planned during spring break, however those are much briefer - please see the announcement on Sakai for more details).

Below is the announcement from OIT:

On Tuesday, March 19, 2013 beginning at 9:00pm during regularly scheduled services test time, CSS NB will be upgrading  a major portion of our NetApp storage infrastructure.   This work should take approximately 4 hours and will completed by 1:00am on Wednesday, March 20, 2013.  We've schedule this over spring break to minimize potential impacts to our user community.  We will be migrating data and services from retiring, out of warranty/off maintenance equipment to new infrastructure, accommodating an ever-increasing demand for data storage and providing for continued reliability and availability of our services.

This upgrade will accomplish several objectives:

 - Upgrading hardware and software infrastructure to
       * improve processing performance and efficiency
       * implement storage virtualization
       * consolidate storage services configuration

 - Increase storage capacity
 - Ensure vendor support of hardware and software infrastructure maintenance
 - Supports Hill Center Data Center reconfiguration project

During this upgrade activity, the following services will NOT be available, please plan accordingly:

- Sakai Course Management and Collaboration Services
- RUMail Collaboration Services
- RCI Email Reading (Webmail, IMAP, POP, Pine)
- RCI Hosted Web Sites
- RCI Hosted Virtual Mail domains
- Other RCI Services

NO OTHER SERVICES WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS ACTIVITY.  We will send reminder notifications prior to the event and confirmation that services have been restored when our work is completed.
